Intersections 5: Colors_Concepts_Contours
Adult Lectures/Demonstrations October 29 Regula Allenspach Weill - Gift Wrapping October 29 If you have always wanted to be more creative in presenting gifts, this lecture will fascinate and inspire you. Regula will show how to use art scraps, new and recycled paper, textiles, and found objects to enhance the impact of gift presentations. When done right, the gift becomes a temporary object d'art. Indeed, appreciative recipients may choose to preserve them indefinitely, even if it means leaving the gift unopened! November 5 Prodding is the traditional way to make a rag into a rug. New interest in this absorbing craft and art form is growing alongside recycling and 'green' movements, and among people using traditional crafts to express their creativity. Allegra will demonstrate this very simple and safe technique of rug making - using recycled clothing, wool and plastic bags. The first 30 attendees can make their own sample. November 12 In this demonstration, Emily will create a basket while she speaks about her "Transordinary Vessels" and the idea of "up-cycling" elaborating on the "anything can be basket material" philosophy. Modern materials will be used with a traditional coiled technique. A variety of ways to start the basket as well as how to add and attach plastics, ordinary re-cycled elements, personal treasures and unexpected ingredients to it will be illustrated. The experience will be anything but "ordinary". November 19 Lucy will demonstrate how used and dried coffee filters can be utilized as a collage material. She will show the many different steps involved in creating one of her beautiful "kimonos". Each filter is brushed clean, emptied of most coffee grounds, ironed flat and painted with a coat of polymer medium to protect the surface. Sewing, stapling, and stamping are some of the ways she will describe to embellish the filters before forming them into different shapes. December 3 Put down your crochet hook and learn to make beautiful lace fast, easy and inexpensively! By using a basic sewing machine and thread Jeanette Carr will demonstrate how to create lace using Solvy, a plastic, water-soluble "fabric". Finished product can be formed and shaped into two dimensional art or three-dimensional sculptures. December 10 In this demo Melissa will discuss some of the history of the pine needle basket as well as show how needles are gathered and stitched. She will demonstrate the two main stitches used in coiled baskets: how to make the “Start” and how to keep the wall even. Discussions will also include non-traditional materials and shapes. Children’s classes will also be offered by fiber/Dimension Artists during the Intersections 5 Exhibition to select Bay Area School students coordinated by the Presidio Trust. Myrna Tater will help students create imaginative Game Boxes, Allegra Burke will show students how to recycle discarded clothing and left over materials to create Rag Rugs, Emily Dvorin will help children create “Wacky Baskets” working with hardware cloth and attachments, Joan Klein will have students weaving colorful patterns on a board with string, Kathryn Grothe will teach how to finger crochet little sculptures, and Rose Marie Ginsburg will help students create woven bookmarks on a cardboard loom.
